E-mail

If this project goes well it will lead to Tongzhou replacing its remaining 15,000 main road high pressure sodium lights with LED lights. The estimated value of this business to U-Tron is more than RMB300 million over the next two years. This is a pilot project and involves about 185 lampposts. Each lamppost currently has a 500 Watt HPS light facing the main road and a 250Watt HPS lighting the sidewalk. The re-lamping is a complex task due to the following existing conditions:

1. The lampposts were built in the 1970s with poles of a non-standard diameter. They are much larger than those used around the world in modern times. More then 88mm at the tip is unheard of for this application.

2. The lights must match the current LUX figures. Some are in the excess of 50 lux, and they must reach this value through out the road. Otherwise the public will protest. They are used to the current brightness and would oppose any conversion that leads to a reduction in illumination.

3. All new LED Lamps must be painted white to match the current ambience.

4. The project must be completed well in advance of the 2010 October 1st National Day celebrations. That will give the contractor only 15 days for installation and commissioning of the replacement lights.

U-Tron has developed a new lighting concept with two Lucas III 90 lamps side-by-side to tackle this task: introducing the Lucas Twin Head 180. The new lamp was put through all the necessary acceptance tests before it was offered to the Tongzhou government.

The first sets of six lamp posts were successfully re-lamped on August 30, 2010 and are undergoing the preliminary acceptance tests.  If these pass the tests the rest of the lamps will be replaced on or before the September  10, 2010.

"Through this pilot project we want to let the Tongzhou government know that LEDs are ready for general lighting and they can match the HPS performance." said Mr. Magasweran, the president of U-Tron. "The only difference is the cost of operation, it's just below half of what they are paying now in electric bills."
